Former Nigerian minister Rotimi Amaechi has cast doubt on the ability of opposition figures Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi to unseat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, arguing that past electoral outcomes demonstrate the need for a different strategy.

Speaking in response to questions about his own political prospects, Amaechi said both Atiku and Obi had already been “tested” at the polls, each securing millions of votes but ultimately falling short of victory.

“They have not been able to defeat Tinubu,” Amaechi said. “Only someone who understands how to defeat him should step forward.”

The former transportation minister pointed to his role in past election campaigns, noting that he led efforts that delivered significant voter support for former President Muhammadu Buhari.

“I led the campaign for Buhari twice and delivered 15 million votes,” he said, suggesting that his experience could prove decisive in future electoral contests.

Amaechi’s remarks come amid ongoing discussions within Nigeria’s opposition about strategy and leadership ahead of the next election cycle, as political actors weigh their chances against the incumbent administration.
