Senate President Godswill Akpabio has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to reconsider the Federal Government’s directive withdrawing police protection from Very Important Persons (VIPs), a decision that has triggered anxiety among lawmakers.
Speaking during Tuesday’s plenary, Akpabio revealed that several members of the National Assembly had expressed concerns about their safety following the new security policy, noting that some were unsure if they could return home without their police escorts.
“Some members of the National Assembly say I should let you know that they may not be able to go home today,” Akpabio said. “We pleaded with the President to review the decision.”
The Federal Government recently ordered a sweeping withdrawal of police personnel attached to VIPs, citing the need to strengthen general public security and redirect officers to core policing duties. The move, however, has faced pushback from lawmakers and other influential individuals who rely on police protection due to heightened insecurity across the country.
Akpabio assured his colleagues that discussions were ongoing with the Presidency to find a balanced approach that prioritises national security while addressing genuine safety concerns.
