Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Wednesday said both the 10th Senate and the President Bola Tinubu administration support the creation of Anioma State, adding that Asaba would be the capital of the proposed state while Warri would serve as the capital of the remaining Delta State.

Akpabio made the announcement at the All Progressives Congress (APC) South‑South zonal conference in Asaba, Delta State, where governors from Delta, Edo, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Rivers and Cross River attended, alongside other party leaders and stakeholders from the region.

Describing the agitation for Anioma as historically justified, Akpabio said the proposal—championed in the Senate by Senator Ned Nwoko (Delta North)—reflects a long‑standing demand for equity, administrative efficiency and balanced development. He said the initiative has continued to receive legislative attention and ranks among the priorities of the current Senate.

“Anioma State will be created, with Asaba as its capital. The Senate fully supports the initiative spearheaded by Senator Ned Nwoko,” Akpabio told delegates. “This step will usher in a new era of development and shared prosperity for all constituent communities.”

On the status of the rest of Delta, Akpabio said Warri would be designated the capital of the reconstituted Delta State, citing the city’s existing infrastructure, including an airport, government offices, operations of major oil companies, a seaport and a stadium.

The Senate President said the proposed restructuring would split Delta into two viable entities and promote decentralisation. He also called for unity among people of the South‑South as the process moves forward.

Details of the next legislative steps and timelines for any formal state‑creation process were not announced at the conference.
