A chieftain of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Buba Galadima, has fiercely criticised the defection of Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, describing the move as one driven purely by personal interest and a betrayal of the people who elected him.

Speaking during an interview on Sunday, Galadima accused the governor of abandoning the mandate given to him by Kano voters, insisting that the defection had nothing to do with public interest or good governance. According to him, the decision represents a breach of trust between the governor and the electorate.

“This defection was done for his personal interest. It is a betrayal of the people of Kano,” Galadima said. “The people voted for a party and an ideology, not an individual who would later turn his back on them.”

In strongly worded remarks, the NNPP stalwart likened the governor’s action to some of history’s most infamous acts of disloyalty. He described the defection as “the third betrayal in the history of humanity”, drawing parallels with Judas Iscariot’s betrayal of Jesus Christ and Brutus’ role in the assassination of Julius Caesar.

Galadima argued that such political defections undermine democratic values and weaken public confidence in the electoral process. He warned that frequent party switching by elected officials fuels voter apathy and erodes accountability.

The governor’s defection has continued to generate intense political debate in Kano State and beyond, with supporters and critics trading accusations over its implications for governance and party politics ahead of future elections.

As reactions pour in, analysts say the development could reshape political alliances in Kano, a key state in Nigeria’s electoral landscape, while also reigniting calls for stronger legal and ethical constraints on political defections.
