Former Kogi West senator Dino Melaye has criticised President Bola Tinubu after a video emerged showing the Nigerian leader referring to himself as a governor, prompting fresh questions about the president’s public remarks.
Melaye, reacting to the footage, said he had not realised the situation was “this bad”, in a remark that appeared to mock Tinubu over the verbal slip.
The video, which has circulated online, has drawn attention to the president’s choice of words and triggered reactions among Nigerians on social media.
Tinubu, who served as governor of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007, became president in May 2023 after winning the 2023 presidential election.
Melaye, a vocal critic of the president, has repeatedly challenged the Tinubu administration over its policies and leadership.
The latest exchange adds to the political sparring between opposition figures and the president’s supporters, amid continuing public debate over the administration’s performance.
Further details about the circumstances in which Tinubu made the remark, including the full context of the video, would be needed to establish precisely what prompted Melaye’s reaction.
