President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is scheduled to deliver a joint address to the National Assembly on June 12 as Nigeria commemorates its 27th Democracy Day anniversary, according to the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF).

The announcement was made during the inauguration of the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) responsible for coordinating activities for the national celebration.

Speaking at the Shehu Shagari Complex in Abuja, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, described the presidential address as one of the key highlights of this year’s Democracy Day programme.

Akume said the occasion provides an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the sacrifices made by pro-democracy activists who fought for the restoration of democratic governance. He paid tribute to the heroes of the June 12, 1993 struggle, particularly the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, widely regarded as a symbol of Nigeria’s democratic journey.

The SGF noted that Democracy Day also offers the Federal Government a platform to showcase its efforts in strengthening democratic institutions and promoting national development amid ongoing economic and social challenges.

With preparations entering their final phase, Akume urged members of the committee to intensify efforts to ensure a successful commemoration. He added that the activities planned for this year’s anniversary would reflect the prevailing national mood and the administration’s commitment to prudent spending.

The approved programme for the 27th Democracy Day celebrations includes:

• World Press Conference – June 4, 2026

• Special Juma’at Prayers – June 5, 2026

• Inter-denominational Church Service – June 7, 2026

• Democracy Day Public Lecture – June 9, 2026

• Youth and Women-Oriented Programmes – June 10, 2026

• Presidential Broadcast – June 12, 2026

• Democracy Day Gala Night – June 12, 2026

The June 12 observance has become a defining symbol of Nigeria’s democratic evolution, honouring the struggle for civil rule and the enduring aspirations of its citizens for accountable governance.
