Nigeria’s Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway will be redirected through the existing East-West Road between Ondo and Edo states to avoid constructing a new alignment, Works Minister Dave Umahi says.
President Bola Tinubu has directed the rerouting of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway through the existing East-West Road corridor linking Ondo and Edo states, Minister of Works Dave Umahi has said.
Umahi said the directive was aimed at avoiding the construction of a new alignment along the corridor because of the difficult terrain.
According to the minister, Tinubu instructed that the coastal highway should follow the existing road rather than create a separate route.
“Divert, do not do any new alignments. Pass the coastal highway through the existing East-West road,” Umahi quoted the president as saying.
The decision is expected to shape the highway’s route through the affected areas, although details of the revised alignment and its implementation were not provided in the statement.
The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is one of the Federal Government’s major road infrastructure projects, designed to connect communities along Nigeria’s southern coastline.
The project has attracted considerable public attention because of its scale, cost and potential implications for transportation and economic activity across the coastal states.
The latest directive signals a change in the planned route through the Ondo-Edo corridor, with the government opting to use existing road infrastructure instead of developing a new alignment through the difficult terrain.
Further details on the revised route and the timeline for implementing the directive are yet to be announced.
