The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi chapter, has declared an immediate and indefinite strike over outstanding salaries and allowances owed its members.
The union announced the decision on Wednesday following a congress held at the university, where members resolved to withdraw their services under the banner of “No Pay, No Work.”
In a statement signed by the branch chairperson, Terseer Abari, ASUU said the university had failed to fully implement components of the 2025 agreement reached between the Federal Government and the union.
According to the union, members have so far received only two components of the outstanding payments — the Consolidated Academic Staff Salaries and the Earned Academic Allowance.
It said the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance and Professorial Allowance had only been paid for January and February 2026, while just 39% of the March 2026 CATA had been paid.
ASUU said the outstanding payments amounted to significant underpayment of its members’ salaries and could no longer be ignored.
The union therefore directed its members to immediately suspend all academic activities until the university settles the outstanding obligations.
“There shall be no teaching, student supervision, examinations, statutory meetings and any other academic activity during the period of this strike,” the union said.
It added that the strike would remain in force until all outstanding salaries owed its members were fully paid.
The development is expected to disrupt academic activities at the institution, with students potentially facing suspension of lectures, examinations and other academic engagements.
ASUU’s latest action adds to a series of disputes between university-based unions and authorities across Nigeria over unpaid salaries, allowances and the implementation of agreements on staff welfare.
