Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, could soon make his first official visit to the United States since returning to office, with a possible meeting with US President Donald Trump on the horizon, according to Nigeria’s ambassador in Washington.

Speaking during a televised interview, Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United States, Kayode Are, said diplomatic engagement between Abuja and Washington had reached a level that makes a presidential meeting increasingly likely.

“There is a good level of contact and engagement from top to bottom, even if the two leaders have not yet met physically,” Are said, expressing confidence that arrangements for a White House visit could materialise during his tenure as ambassador.

The envoy stressed that while the scheduling of state visits ultimately depends on the priorities of both presidents, relations between Nigeria and the United States remain strong and continue to deepen through high-level diplomatic and security cooperation.

Are, a former head of Nigeria’s domestic intelligence service, formally assumed office as ambassador in May after presenting his letter of credence to Trump at the White House, marking the beginning of his diplomatic assignment in Washington.

A meeting between Tinubu and Trump would be expected to focus on security cooperation, trade, investment and broader strategic relations between Africa’s largest economy and the United States, as both countries seek to strengthen bilateral ties amid evolving regional and global challenges.
