The United Nations has revealed that weapons looted from Libyan stockpiles during the 2011 conflict have found their way into the hands of extremist groups operating in Nigeria, raising fresh concerns over regional security and the long-term consequences of the North African nation’s collapse.

According to the UN, the proliferation of arms following the overthrow of Libya’s government has contributed to the spread of illicit weapons across the Sahel and West Africa, where armed groups continue to exploit porous borders and weak security networks.

The disclosure underscores growing fears that the fallout from Libya’s decade-long instability continues to fuel violence far beyond its borders, with Nigeria among the countries grappling with the impact of the unchecked flow of sophisticated weaponry into the region.
