United States Senator Lindsey Graham has called on Arab nations to join the ongoing military confrontation with Iran, warning that Washington could reconsider defence agreements with regional allies if they fail to support what he described as a critical fight for American interests.

Speaking amid escalating hostilities involving the United States and its allies in the Middle East, the Republican lawmaker urged Gulf states — particularly Saudi Arabia and members of the Gulf Cooperation Council — to take a more direct military role in the campaign against Tehran.

Graham argued that the conflict is one “America cannot afford to lose,” stressing that regional partners must share the burden of confronting the Iranian government.

“It is my understanding the Kingdom refuses to use their capable military as part of an effort to end the Iranian regime that has terrorised the region,” Graham wrote, questioning why the United States should pursue a defence agreement with countries unwilling to join what he called a “fight of mutual interest.”

The senator also suggested that Washington could reconsider long-sought defence guarantees for Gulf partners if they decline to participate militarily. Such agreements, similar to existing US security pacts with key allies, would commit the United States to defending partner nations if attacked.

Graham’s remarks come as tensions between Washington and Tehran continue to escalate following a series of attacks and retaliatory strikes across the region. The conflict has already resulted in American casualties and billions of dollars in military spending, according to the senator.

Regional governments, however, have signalled caution about becoming directly involved. Diplomats from several Gulf states have called for de-escalation, warning that a wider war could destabilise the Middle East and threaten global energy supplies.

Despite those concerns, Graham maintained that the confrontation with Iran is unavoidable and urged Arab governments to take a stronger stance, saying the conflict is unfolding “in their backyard”.

The senator’s comments have triggered debate in Washington and among US allies over the risk of a broader regional war and the extent to which Middle Eastern partners should be expected to support US military operations.
