The Senate has passed a landmark bill establishing a unified, toll-free emergency reporting system designed to significantly strengthen Nigeria’s crisis-response capabilities.
The proposed legislation seeks to introduce a single, accessible telephone number that citizens across the country can dial to report emergencies swiftly—whether related to security, health, fire outbreaks, accidents, or other urgent situations. The nationwide system aims to eliminate delays caused by fragmented reporting channels and ensure that calls are directed to the nearest relevant emergency agency for rapid intervention.
Lawmakers hailed the bill as a major step towards improving public safety infrastructure and ensuring that Nigerians, regardless of their location, can access timely help during critical moments.
The bill will now be transmitted to the House of Representatives for concurrence before proceeding to the President for assent. If fully implemented, Nigeria will join several countries with harmonised emergency response numbers, marking a significant boost to national security and public safety.
