Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has expressed disappointment after Fulham’s 2–1 loss to Newcastle United at St. James’ Park on Saturday — a game that marked his 300th Premier League appearance, making him the first Nigerian footballer to reach the milestone.
The match, which ended in heartbreak for Fulham following a late strike from Bruno Guimarães, also sealed a fourth consecutive defeat for Marco Silva’s men, deepening their struggles in the league.
Speaking after the match, Iwobi admitted that the result was painful, especially as Fulham had worked hard to stay in the contest.
“Of course, we’re very disappointed,” the 29-year-old said. “We knew it was going to be a hard game and a tough place to come to, but if we don’t win, then we shouldn’t lose, and maintain the draw. Unfortunately, a last-minute winner is a dagger in the heart, but we have to pick ourselves up and go into next week’s game.”
Iwobi, who played 89 minutes before being substituted, said the team performed better in the second half but failed to take their chances.
“Going into the second half, we had the bigger spark. Obviously, there were a lot of changes; there was a lot more dynamism going on down the flanks. We were able to hurt them and create a few chances, but if we don’t take our chances, good teams like Newcastle can punish us,” he explained.
He, however, remained optimistic that the team could bounce back with consistency and focus.
“As long as we stay consistent, give 100% and stay focused until 90-plus minutes, I’m sure we can get the results that we need,” he added.
Reflecting on his personal achievement, Iwobi described reaching 300 Premier League appearances as a proud moment in his career.
“It’s amazing. It’s a big achievement to lead that, with the likes of Shola Ameobi and even my uncle, Jay-Jay Okocha, that’s participated in the Premier League. It’s an honour, but I’m not done yet. I’m going to keep on going and hopefully keep the record going,” he said.
Iwobi now joins an elite list of African players who have made 300 or more appearances in the English Premier League, including Kolo Touré (353), Mohamed Salah (309), Jordan Ayew (305), and Wilfried Zaha (305).
Fulham will next face Wycombe Wanderers in the EFL Cup fourth round on Tuesday, as they look to regain momentum and confidence.
