Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has made it clear that William Troost-Ekong remains the official captain of the Nigerian national team, putting to rest rumours suggesting a change in leadership ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifying playoffs against Gabon.

Chelle, who took charge earlier this year, dismissed widespread speculation that Wilfred Ndidi had replaced the veteran defender as captain. Speaking on Eagle7 103.7 Sports FM, Abeokuta, the Malian tactician reaffirmed his confidence in Troost-Ekong’s leadership qualities despite the player’s limited starting opportunities at Al-Kholood in Saudi Arabia.

“I never talked about the captain. For me, my captain is William Troost-Ekong, I prefer to say this first,” Chelle stated firmly.

He further revealed that beyond Troost-Ekong, a small inner circle of senior players plays an advisory role in the team’s leadership structure.

“I have a little circle  four or five players — that I turn to when I need to ask something. When I want something, the first I ask is William, Moses, Wilfred, and Victor Osimhen. If I’m not happy with the group, I talk to these guys. If I want to ask the players questions, I ask them first before I make my decision,” he explained.

Chelle’s comments underline a deliberate strategy to build unity and discipline within the squad, blending experience with responsibility as Nigeria prepares for crucial fixtures on the road to the 2026 World Cup.

However, the coach hinted that while Troost-Ekong remains captain for now, future adjustments to the leadership hierarchy could be considered before the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

“The reality is, first, William Troost-Ekong is my captain. After that, we will see what happens before the AFCON or maybe not,” he added.

Troost-Ekong, who made his international debut in 2015, has long been a stabilising figure for the Super Eagles both on and off the pitch. His experience, alongside players like Moses Simon, Wilfred Ndidi, and Victor Osimhen, continues to anchor the team’s evolving leadership dynamics.

Meanwhile, Alex Iwobi, with 89 caps, remains Nigeria’s most experienced active international player, having been a consistent part of the national setup since his debut in 2015.
