Detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has named several high-profile Nigerian figures as proposed witnesses in his ongoing legal battle.

Among those listed are former Attorney-General Abubakar Malami, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, Minister of Works David Umahi, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, former Chief of Army Staff Tukur Buratai, and retired General Theophilus Danjuma.

Kanu’s legal team submitted the names as part of proceedings related to his trial on charges including treasonable felony and terrorism. The move is seen as a strategic shift in the defence’s approach, potentially opening the door to testimonies from individuals across Nigeria’s political and military elite.

Observers suggest that if admitted by the court, the witnesses could provide critical insights into the events surrounding Kanu’s arrest and extradition, as well as broader issues relating to the Biafra agitation.

Further hearings are expected in the coming weeks.
