Afrobeats artist Folarin Odunlami, popularly known as Fola, has shared a harrowing experience from his first day in Lagos that almost made him quit music.
Speaking on The Beat 99.9 FM Lagos, the ‘Alone’ crooner recalled being arrested and spending his very first night in the city at a police station after relocating in 2018. “I relocated to Lagos in 2018 to pursue my music career. It has been rough but… I wasn’t born here, so it was so hard at first but I have adapted to both the living conditions and the hustle,” Fola said.
He described the day he arrived as “a long story” he preferred not to revisit, revealing, “The very first day I came to Lagos, I was arrested. I slept at the police station. It was so demoralising, I almost gave up.”
Despite the rocky start, Fola’s resilience saw him adjust to the city’s challenges. “At first it was tough. But now I understand the hustle, the pressure, and the lifestyle. You have to be strong if you want to survive here,” he added.
Since then, his music career has taken a positive turn. In October 2024, he signed with Bella Shmurda’s record label, Dagbani Republik, gaining wider recognition for his lyrical quality and unique sound.
Fans and netizens have praised Fola’s journey, highlighting his perseverance in the face of adversity. One user noted, “Omo, Lagos no dey smile. First night in cell? Respect to Fola for not packing his bags and running back. This is real hustle spirit.” Another wrote, “From prison bed to music charts, God really dey write the best scripts. Fola’s story is pure motivation.”
