Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has pledged to deliver a new kind of leadership, one that resonates with the aspirations of Nigerians and reflects true democratic ideals.

In a recent meeting held in Abuja, the party’s 9th National Executive Committee (NEC) session confirmed its unflinching commitment to a transformative agenda for the country. National Chairman, Dr. Ajuji Ahmed, made it clear that the party’s focus is to bring about the change Nigeria needs. He proudly affirmed, “The direction of the party is the only direction worth following,” praising the exemplary governance of Kano State Governor, Engr. Kabir Yusuf, as a perfect model for good leadership.

Dr. Ahmed further commended former presidential candidate and party leader, Engr. Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso, for revitalising the party’s national appeal. According to him, Kwankwaso’s leadership has been a major draw for Nigerians, particularly the talakawas, who have long been seeking a voice in the nation’s politics.

Dipo Olayoku, the party’s National Secretary, also took the opportunity to address the internal reforms within the party as it gears up for upcoming elections. He highlighted the party’s readiness for the Anambra gubernatorial and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) area council elections. “We are committed to restructuring, and any form of anti-party activity will not be tolerated,” he warned. He also reaffirmed that the NNPP’s relationship with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) remains solid, with the party having submitted all required financial accounts for scrutiny.

A key moment in the meeting was the approval of motions to dissolve caretaker committees in several states, including Adamawa, Bauchi, Benue, Gombe, and Taraba, as part of an ongoing restructuring process. However, the tenure of the Lagos State caretaker committee was extended, and a new committee was appointed in Jigawa State, further demonstrating the party’s commitment to restructuring and reorganising its operations for greater effectiveness.

The NEC meeting also saw key figures within the party expressing confidence in its growing influence. Senate Deputy Minority Leader, Sen. Rufai Hanga, stressed the importance of political parties in shaping the aspirations of both leaders and the electorate, while House Caucus Leader, Hon. Kabiru Jobi, celebrated the party’s increasing influence in the National Assembly, with 15 members now part of their caucus.

Additionally, the Deputy Governor of Kano State, Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, reaffirmed his unwavering support for Kwankwaso, whom he called the “supreme leader of Kwankwasiya and National Leader of NNPP.”

In a motivational speech, Kwankwaso urged party members to remain steadfast despite political defections and external pressures. Reflecting on his own political journey, Kwankwaso recalled his loss in 2003, noting that despite the emotional outcry from his supporters, he returned even stronger and was later re-elected.

Criticising current electoral practices, Kwankwaso called for reforms in the process, particularly the announcement of results at polling units, which he believes would help reduce manipulation. He reassured the party’s supporters that despite the setbacks, NNPP is rapidly expanding, with offices now established in all 36 states of Nigeria.

The party’s renewed commitment to grassroots inclusion and its determination to offer a viable political alternative to Nigerians ahead of the crucial 2027 elections were central to the discussions.
