Nigeria has secured a significant pledge of stronger military cooperation from the Russian Federation in its determined fight against terrorism. Russia has offered a comprehensive package of support, including the provision of weapons, operational support, and strategic expertise, aimed at significantly bolstering Nigeria’s ongoing counterinsurgency operations.
The commitment was conveyed during a courtesy visit by Lieutenant General Andrei Averianov, the Representative of the President of the Russian Federation, to Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja. Speaking on behalf of President Vladimir Putin and the Russian Minister of Defence, Lt Gen Averianov emphasized Russia’s readiness to deepen defence cooperation with Nigeria, recognizing the West African nation as a major regional power and a critical partner in the fight against terrorism.
Lt Gen Averianov highlighted Russia’s extensive experience in counterterrorism, noting that the country is currently engaged in special operations against 39 adversary nations. He stated that through these operations, Russia has developed new and effective counterterrorism strategies and tactics, which it is eager to share with Nigeria to enhance its capabilities in combating threats such as Al-Qaeda and Boko Haram.
The Russian representative affirmed Russia’s commitment to providing Nigeria with the full range of weapons required by its Armed Forces to prosecute the war on terror effectively. He also noted that Russia has been closely observing and learning from Nigeria’s counterterrorism efforts over the years, underscoring a mutual interest in shared security objectives.
In response, General Musa expressed his appreciation for Russia’s support and emphasized the need for expanded partnerships in critical areas such as special operations training, intelligence sharing, and the maintenance of military equipment. He highlighted Nigeria’s existing inventory of Russian-made platforms, many of which are currently unserviceable due to a lack of spare parts and the need for specialized maintenance. General Musa specifically requested Russia’s assistance in providing these spare parts and deploying Russian experts for in-country maintenance or facilitating the return of equipment to Russia for repairs.
Furthermore, the Chief of Defence Staff stressed the importance of enhanced intelligence sharing between the two nations, recognizing Russia’s valuable experience and capacity gained from its extensive operations, particularly in the Sahel region. He also welcomed Russia’s gesture of personally delivering equipment and providing a team of experts to assist in their testing, acknowledging that the Russian Federation had fulfilled its prior commitments to Nigeria.
General Musa also proposed the exchange of instructors and students between the military institutions of both countries to foster better understanding and collaboration in training and operations. He specifically outlined Nigeria’s needs for expanded training in Special Operations for its Army, Navy, and Air Force, as well as the provision of essential equipment such as special boats, fast attack craft, and amphibious training capabilities.
This strengthened military cooperation between Nigeria and Russia signals a significant development in Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and enhance its national security. The pledged support from Russia, encompassing weapons, expertise, and logistical assistance, could prove crucial in bolstering Nigeria’s counterinsurgency operations and addressing the complex security challenges facing the nation.
