Negotiations over a possible defection of Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) have stalled amid disagreements over political guarantees ahead of the 2027 elections.

Sources familiar with the talks say discussions hit a deadlock after the APC resisted Yusuf’s reported demand for an automatic ticket to contest a second term as governor in 2027. Party leaders are said to be wary of conceding such assurances, citing internal processes and the need to balance competing interests within the party.

Governor Yusuf, elected in 2023 on the platform of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), has been at the centre of sustained political speculation in Kano, a key battleground state with significant electoral weight in northern Nigeria.

The APC, which lost the state in the last gubernatorial election, is keen to regain control but remains cautious about the terms of any high-profile defection, particularly one that could unsettle existing party structures and aspirants.

Neither Yusuf nor the APC has publicly confirmed the details of the negotiations. However, political analysts say the reported standoff underscores the high stakes ahead of the 2027 polls and the limits of elite bargaining in Nigeria’s fluid party system.

For now, talks remain suspended, leaving the governor’s political future — and Kano’s shifting alliances — uncertain.
