The executive director of the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC), Clement Nwankwo, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to establish clear and transparent rules for the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

Nwankwo said the commission must put in place verifiable procedures before deploying AI in the electoral process to ensure that technology strengthens public confidence in elections rather than undermines it.

He made the call in Abuja on Tuesday while speaking at the eighth annual public lecture of the Just Friends Club of Nigeria (JFCN).

The lecture, themed “From Concern to Action: Making Our Votes Count in the 2027 General Elections”, focused on measures to improve electoral credibility and ensure that votes translate into legitimate political outcomes.

Nwankwo stressed that the adoption of emerging technologies in elections must be guided by transparency, accountability and safeguards capable of protecting the will of the electorate.

His comments come as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections, with growing attention on the role of technology in electoral administration and the need to maintain public trust in the process.

The PLAC director’s position underscores the importance of establishing clear standards for how AI tools are introduced, monitored and verified, particularly where their use could affect electoral information, decision-making or public confidence.

He maintained that technology should serve as a tool for strengthening electoral integrity, with transparent procedures helping to ensure that its application does not compromise the credibility of the polls.
