The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Basiru, has declared that the ruling party enjoys strong support among political leaders and ordinary citizens across Northern Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Basiru said the North remains a major stronghold of the APC, expressing confidence that the party’s strength in the region would become evident during the elections.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, October 21, the APC chieftain pointed to growing political mobilisation and support from influential northern figures as indications of the party’s presence in the region.
“The strength of the APC is in the Northern part of this country,” he declared.
Basiru cited the establishment of the Arewa for Asiwaju campaign movement, which is supporting President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.
According to him, prominent northern figures from politics, business and industry recently gathered to donate a campaign office to the movement.
He also claimed that some politicians previously associated with opposition parties were now willing to work with the APC.
Among those he mentioned was former Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu, whom he identified as one of the political figures moving towards cooperation with the ruling party.
Basiru maintained that the APC’s northern support extended beyond political leaders to ordinary citizens.
He argued that the party’s growing network of supporters would strengthen its activities ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The APC national secretary also criticised opposition parties over what he described as their unwillingness to accept electoral defeats.
He recalled President Tinubu’s position that politicians seeking victory in a democracy must equally be prepared to accept defeat.
According to Basiru, the APC had suffered setbacks in political contests and court cases but had accepted the outcomes, learned from its experiences and moved forward.
He maintained that opposition parties should demonstrate similar respect for the democratic process rather than treating electoral losses as unacceptable.
