The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has condemned the Federal and state governments over what it described as a disappointing and unfortunate failure to rescue 177 worshippers abducted by terrorists more than three weeks ago.

In a statement issued on Monday, the rights group expressed deep concern over the continued captivity of the victims, who were reportedly seized during a religious gathering, noting that the prolonged silence and inaction from authorities have worsened the anguish of their families and communities.

HURIWA criticised security agencies and political leaders for what it called a lack of urgency and transparency in handling the abduction, warning that the delay sends a dangerous signal of weakness and impunity to criminal groups across the country.

“The inability of the government to secure the release of innocent worshippers after several weeks is unacceptable and deeply troubling,” the association said. “It raises serious questions about the effectiveness of Nigeria’s security architecture and the commitment of leaders to protect lives.”

The group urged President Bola Tinubu, state governors and security chiefs to prioritise the rescue operation, deploy all available intelligence resources and keep the public informed of concrete steps being taken to free the abducted worshippers.

HURIWA also called for improved security around places of worship nationwide, stressing that citizens should be able to practise their faith without fear of violence or abduction.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the Federal Government nor the affected state authorities had issued an official update on efforts to rescue the victims.
