Zenith Bank Plc observed World Environment Day 2026 with a two-phase clean-up campaign in Lagos this week, mobilising staff and partnering with state agencies to clear streets and waterways under the United Nations’ global theme “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.”

The first phase on Wednesday, June 3, saw bank employees carry out a morning clean-up along Ajose Adeogun Street, Victoria Island, where teams removed litter and engaged residents on proper waste disposal. The following day, June 4, volunteers joined the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) for a waterways clean-up at the Falomo Waterways, Ikoyi, focusing on the removal of marine debris and the promotion of cleaner waterways.

Dame Dr. Adaora Umeoji, OON, Group Managing Director/CEO of Zenith Bank, said the actions reflect the bank’s sustainability commitments. “At Zenith Bank, sustainability is integral to how we operate. Clearing our streets and our waterways is a practical reminder that protecting the environment is a shared responsibility – and one we are proud to take up alongside LAWMA and LASWA,” she said. “Through these exercises, we are taking deliberate action to preserve our communities, support climate action, and inspire others to act.”

Zenith Bank said the clean-ups align with its broader Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) agenda and contribute to several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, notably SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 13 (Climate Action). The bank added that sustainability will remain a central consideration across its operations in Nigeria and its wider African, UK and European footprint.
