Eleven Nigerian states spent a combined N10.6 billion on foreign travels within six months, with Zamfara, Yobe and Kogi recording the highest expenditures, according to an analysis of state government spending data.
The figures show that the funds were allocated for overseas trips by government officials between January and June, covering expenses such as official visits, international engagements, conferences and other foreign assignments.
Zamfara State ranked highest among the states, recording the largest expenditure on foreign travels during the period, followed by Yobe and Kogi.
The spending has sparked renewed debate over the cost of governance in Nigeria, with analysts questioning whether such foreign trips translate into measurable benefits for citizens, particularly amid economic hardship and rising demands for improved public services.
Supporters of international engagements, however, argue that foreign trips can provide opportunities for governments to attract investments, build partnerships, gain technical knowledge and strengthen diplomatic relations.
Nigeria’s 36 states continue to face pressure to prioritise spending on critical sectors, including education, healthcare, infrastructure and job creation, as citizens demand greater accountability and transparency in public finances.
The latest figures come amid ongoing calls from civil society groups and policy experts for stricter monitoring of government expenditures and a review of spending priorities at both state and federal levels.
