The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has formally expelled several prominent members, including Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT); Samuel Anyanwu, the party’s suspended National Secretary; and Ayo Fayose, former Governor of Ekiti State. The decision was ratified on Saturday during the party’s national convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The expulsions were proposed through a motion by Olabode George, former National Vice-Chairman (South), and seconded by Samaila Buga, Chairman of the PDP in Bauchi. Bala Mohammed, Governor of Bauchi and Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, presided over the voice vote that finalized the action.

In addition to Wike, Fayose, and Anyanwu, the list of expelled members includes Umar Bature, Ajibade Kamarudeen, Mao Ohabunwa, Uwachukuwu, George Turner, Dan Orbih, Mohammed Abdulrahman, Austin Nwachukwu, and Abraham Amah.

The convention proceeded despite legal challenges from a faction led by Wike, which had sought to halt the event through the courts. A ruling from the Oyo State High Court ultimately permitted the convention to take place as scheduled.

Mao Ohabunwa, Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Wike-aligned faction, dismissed the convention as illegitimate, referring to it as a “jamboree” and advising attendees to “have fun” in Ibadan. He emphasized that his faction would not recognize the outcomes of the event, citing adherence to court decisions and a circular issued by Anyanwu notifying members of a postponement.

Mohammed Abdulrahman, Acting National Chairman of the dissenting group, urged delegates to avoid the convention and await further directives, reaffirming his commitment to strengthening a unified PDP.

In response, Wike praised supporters for their loyalty and reiterated his dedication to upholding the rule of law, vowing not to yield to intimidation.

The expulsions mark a significant escalation in the internal conflict within the PDP, highlighting deepening divisions as the party navigates its future direction.
