Yemen’s Houthi rebels have warned they may shut down the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a crucial maritime chokepoint linking the Red Sea to the Arabian Sea. The announcement raises concerns over potential disruptions to global shipping and oil transport.
The strait, one of the world’s busiest waterways, sees a significant share of international trade, including oil shipments from the Middle East to Europe and North America. Analysts warn that any closure could sharply increase shipping costs and exacerbate regional tensions.
The Houthis’ threat comes amid ongoing conflict in Yemen, where years of war have already devastated the country’s infrastructure and humanitarian situation. Regional powers and international observers are closely monitoring the situation, urging calm and restraint.
Maritime security experts say the international community could respond with diplomatic pressure or military presence to keep the vital corridor open, highlighting the strategic significance of the Bab el-Mandeb in global trade and regional security.
