Nigeria’s Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has approved the promotion of more than 2,000 workers across the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), officials have said.
The approval, announced on Tuesday, is expected to affect staff who successfully met the requirements during the most recent promotion exercise, ending months of anticipation among workers in the FCT civil service.
According to sources within the FCTA, the promotions cut across various cadres and departments, reflecting what authorities described as the minister’s commitment to staff welfare and institutional efficiency.
Wike, a former governor of Rivers State, has repeatedly pledged to prioritise productivity and discipline within the FCT public service since assuming office. Officials say the latest decision is part of broader efforts to motivate workers and strengthen service delivery in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
Senior administrators within the FCTA noted that the promotion exercise followed established civil service rules, including performance assessments and recommendations from relevant committees.
The development has been welcomed by labour unions and staff members, many of whom described it as a morale booster amid rising economic pressures.
The FCT administration has not yet released a detailed breakdown of beneficiaries, but officials confirmed that formal promotion letters would be issued in due course.
