The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has told striking workers that the territory’s budget cannot be devoted entirely to the payment of salaries, stressing that funds must also support infrastructure and public services for residents.

Wike made the remark amid ongoing industrial action by some FCT workers pressing for the settlement of salary-related demands and other benefits. He said while the administration recognises the importance of workers’ welfare, the FCT must balance its obligations to employees with its responsibility to deliver roads, schools, healthcare facilities and other critical projects.

According to the minister, allocating the bulk of public funds solely to recurrent expenditure would stall development and undermine efforts to improve living standards in the capital. He noted that the FCT administration is pursuing a broader agenda focused on upgrading infrastructure, expanding social services and attracting investment.

Wike urged union leaders and workers to embrace dialogue, assuring them that the government remains open to constructive engagement. He added that the administration is reviewing its finances to ensure legitimate entitlements are addressed in a sustainable manner.

He reaffirmed the FCT Administration’s commitment to prudent financial management, arguing that a careful mix of personnel costs and capital spending is essential for the long-term growth of Abuja and the welfare of its residents.
