The demolition of structures obstructing drainage channels in Abuja will be extended beyond Maitama District, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has said.

Mr Wike said the exercise would be carried out across the Federal Capital Territory as part of efforts to tackle flooding and restore the Abuja master plan.

According to a statement issued on Wednesday by Rabi Umar, deputy director of press in the minister’s office, the ongoing demolition is not limited to Maitama and will continue in other parts of the capital.

The minister said structures found to be blocking waterways and drainage channels would be removed in the interest of public safety and proper urban planning.

The move comes amid concerns over flooding in parts of Abuja, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.

The FCT administration has repeatedly warned residents and property developers against building on waterways, drainage corridors and other areas designated for public infrastructure.

Mr Wike said enforcement would continue across the territory, stressing the need to ensure that development in Abuja conforms with the city’s approved master plan.

The latest operation is expected to affect structures identified as obstructing drainage channels, with the authorities maintaining that the exercise is aimed at improving drainage and reducing the risk of flooding across the capital.

The minister’s announcement signals a broader enforcement campaign as the FCT administration intensifies efforts to regulate development and protect Abuja’s drainage infrastructure.
