The National Chairman of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, says President Bola Tinubu would lose the 2027 presidential election if the poll is conducted freely, fairly and credibly.
Mr Baba-Ahmed made the comment during an interview with Channels Television on Wednesday, where he expressed confidence that the outcome of a transparent election would not favour the incumbent president.
“If it is a credible, free and fair election, I assure you Tinubu will lose. I won’t say before 12 noon, maybe before 4pm in the evening,” he said.
The PRP chairman did not provide specific evidence to support his prediction but appeared to base his assessment on what he described as the political mood in the country.
President Tinubu, who was elected in 2023, is expected to seek re-election in 2027, although the contest is likely to attract several opposition figures and parties.
The 2027 election is already shaping up as a major political contest, with debates over the credibility of the electoral process, the performance of the current administration and the strength of the opposition expected to dominate political discourse.
Mr Baba-Ahmed’s remarks come amid growing calls from political actors and civil society groups for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure that the next general election is transparent, peaceful and credible.
The PRP is among the political parties seeking to challenge the dominance of the major parties ahead of the 2027 elections.
