The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of fabricating identities and parading fake defectors as former ADC candidates in northern states.
In a statement issued on Monday, the party’s national publicity secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, said individuals recently showcased by the APC as defecting House of Assembly candidates from Jigawa, Plateau, Taraba and Zamfara were never members, candidates or leaders of the ADC.
Dismissing the APC’s claims as ‘wishful thinking’ and ‘a complete figment of the ruling party’s imagination’, the ADC said the so‑called defectors were staged to create a false impression of momentum ahead of upcoming elections.
‘The African Democratic Congress wishes to clarify to the general public that the individuals paraded by the ruling All Progressives Congress in recent days — purportedly ADC House of Assembly candidates from Jigawa, Plateau, Taraba and Zamfara — are impostors,’ the statement read in part. ‘They have no record in our party register, never held our tickets, and do not represent the ADC at any level. This resort to political theatre shows how desperate the ruling party has become.’
The ADC urged the media and voters to scrutinise announcements from the APC and said its organisational structure and genuine candidates in the named states remain intact.
The APC did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
