The administration of former US President Donald Trump is considering deploying thousands of additional troops to the Middle East, including forces that could be tasked with securing the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz and areas along Iran’s coastline, according to a Reuters report.
The potential deployment comes amid intensifying conflict in the region, where the narrow waterway — through which roughly a fifth of the world’s oil supply passes — has become a focal point of military and economic tensions.
US officials are said to be weighing options to reinforce existing positions and ensure the safe passage of commercial shipping, as disruptions in the Gulf continue to rattle global energy markets and drive up oil prices.
The Strait of Hormuz has effectively become a flashpoint in the broader confrontation involving Iran, with Tehran warning it could target vessels attempting to transit the route, while Washington has signalled readiness to protect maritime traffic if necessary.
The deliberations also follow a series of recent US military moves in the region, including the deployment of additional Marines and naval assets, as well as expanded air operations targeting Iranian-linked infrastructure.
Regional and international concern is mounting, with calls for de-escalation growing louder as the risk of a wider conflict threatens global energy supplies and maritime security.
