The United States Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Monday, January 19, 2026, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr Day, the US diplomatic mission in Nigeria has announced.
In a brief notice, the mission said routine consular services would be suspended for the day to honour the US federal holiday commemorating the life and legacy of the civil rights leader.
Martin Luther King Jr Day is marked annually in the United States on the third Monday of January, celebrating Dr King’s role in advancing civil rights through non-violence and peaceful protest.
The embassy advised the public that normal operations would resume on the next working day and urged US citizens with emergencies to follow existing emergency contact procedures.
The closure is expected to affect visa appointments and other non-emergency services at both diplomatic offices across Nigeria.
