The Dangote Group has expressed sorrow over the death of Ruth Otabor, the sister of Big Brother Naija winner, Phyna, who died from injuries sustained in an accident involving one of the company’s trucks.
In a statement, the company said it had planned to fly Ruth to India for advanced medical treatment, pending clearance from her doctors. It added that since the accident, its officials and insurance partners have been providing full financial and medical support to Ruth and her family.

“Arrangements had been made for her to be flown to India for advanced treatment, pending medical clearance from her doctors,” the statement read. “Sadly, despite these efforts and Ruth’s brave fight to live, we lost her today.”

The company said it extends “heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and loved ones at this difficult time.”
Ruth passed away on Sunday, August 31, 2025, according to a statement from the Otabor family’s representatives. The family had requested privacy to mourn their daughter, sister, and mother, adding that funeral arrangements would be announced later.
The death of Ruth, a recent graduate of Auchi Polytechnic, follows a tragic accident on August 13, 2025, where she was struck by a Dangote truck, which led to the amputation of one of her legs.
The incident had previously led to a public outcry from her sister, Phyna, who took to social media to call out the company for allegedly trying to shield those responsible.
