The US Embassy in Nigeria has issued a stern warning: consular officers will refuse visa applications from Nigerians planning to give birth in the US to secure American citizenship for their children.
In a bold statement shared on X on Monday, the US Mission in Nigeria made it clear that using a visa to travel primarily for childbirth in the US is strictly forbidden. “If consular officers suspect this is your intention, your visa application will be denied,” the US government declared.
This move aligns with President Donald Trump’s ongoing efforts to tighten immigration rules. The administration has been pushing to end birthright citizenship for children of immigrants, sparking fierce legal debates. Adding to the restrictions, the US recently slashed the validity of non-immigrant, non-official visas for Nigerians from five years to just three months.
