A United States agency has disclosed that it repeatedly alerted the Federal Government, the Nigerian military, and the Department of State Services (DSS) about imminent threats leading up to the recent attack in Yelwata, Nasarawa State.
According to reports, the agency, which operates within Nigeria’s security and diplomatic framework, stated that it had issued multiple warnings and intelligence briefs highlighting the likelihood of coordinated assaults in the area. Despite these alerts, the attack reportedly went ahead, resulting in loss of lives and property.
In a statement cited by Politics Nigeria, the agency expressed concern over what it described as delayed or insufficient action from relevant Nigerian authorities. It reiterated its commitment to continued collaboration with Nigeria in counterterrorism and intelligence sharing, stressing that proactive response remains critical to preventing such tragedies.
Security analysts have since called for a thorough investigation into the lapses that allowed the attack to occur despite prior intelligence, urging closer coordination between local and international security partners to strengthen Nigeria’s counterterrorism efforts.
