Music executive Ubi Franklin has strongly denied social media claims that he stole a luxury wristwatch while attending Davido’s wedding in Miami, describing the allegation as “false and misleading.”
The speculation began after a blog post on Wednesday accused Franklin of leaving the US event with a watch that was not his.
Addressing the matter on his official X account, Franklin explained the sequence of events and insisted he had no history of theft. “I am currently aware of the recent circulation on social media linking my name to an alleged theft. I wish to make it clear that these allegations are completely false and misleading,” he wrote.
Franklin said he had travelled to the US for a friend’s wedding while also preparing for his sister’s funeral this weekend. He recounted that while in Miami, a man identified as Benny approached him with a wristwatch for sale. After confirming its previous ownership, Franklin decided against buying it to avoid “potential complications.”
“During the wedding church service, Benny sent his brother another wristwatch to me which I had purchased and paid in full. Given the busy circumstances surrounding the wedding, I was in possession of both wristwatches and wore the one he sent to me through his brother,” he explained.
According to Franklin, he left Miami immediately after the wedding to finalise funeral arrangements. While on a flight, he said Benny contacted him about the other watch.
“I want to state clearly: I am not a thief. I have never stolen from anyone in my life. I purchased a wristwatch and paid in full from Benny. Benny had earlier in the day debunked this news and yet it still kept spreading,” Franklin said.
The incident comes amid heightened public interest in Davido’s high-profile wedding, which attracted celebrities and dignitaries from across Nigeria and abroad.
Franklin’s response marks his first public statement on the controversy, as he called on the public to disregard what he described as a baseless rumour.
