The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has condemned the recent wave of killings in Plateau State, labeling them as “senseless” and “utterly reprehensible” during his visit to the state on Tuesday, April 15. His remarks come in the wake of growing outrage over a series of violent attacks in the Bokkos Local Government Area, which have resulted in numerous fatalities and the displacement of local residents.
In a statement released Wednesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP expressed profound sorrow over the loss of life and pledged to bring the perpetrators to justice. “These killings are not only senseless but a grave assault on the peace and security of our nation. The Nigeria Police Force will not rest until those behind these acts are held accountable,” he stated.
As part of ongoing efforts to restore peace, police have confirmed the arrest of two suspects believed to be connected to the Bokkos killings. “Preliminary investigations and operations in response to these attacks have led to the arrest of two suspects. We are working diligently to uncover the motives and identify other individuals involved,” ACP Adejobi noted.
Following his visit, the IGP directed the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, DIG Kwazhi Dali Yakubu, to coordinate police activities in the affected areas. The DIG has since initiated aerial surveillance over Bokkos and Bassa and is engaging with local stakeholders to build confidence among residents. “We want the people of Plateau State to know that the Police are here for them. We are strengthening our presence and deploying more personnel to deter further violence,” DIG Yakubu emphasized during a stakeholder meeting.
In addition to the arrests, the IGP has ordered the immediate deployment of extra police personnel and resources to Plateau State, which includes enhanced patrols in high-risk areas and intelligence gathering to prevent further attacks. “We are taking a proactive approach by boosting our rapid response capabilities and assessing the security terrain to deploy forces strategically,” ACP Adejobi added.
The IGP assured residents of the Force’s commitment to restoring law and order in the state and appealed for public cooperation with security agencies. “We urge residents to remain calm, stay vigilant, and provide any useful information that can aid our investigation,” he said.
Egbetokun also extended his condolences to the families of the victims and reaffirmed his commitment to justice. “Our hearts go out to the families who have lost loved ones. We stand with the people of Plateau during this difficult time, and we will not allow criminal elements to continue disrupting their peace,” he concluded.
