Operators of tutorial schools have called on the Federal Government to restrict the tenure of registrars of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to a single five-year term without renewal.
The JAMB Act empowers the President to appoint a registrar for five years with the option of reappointment. However, the operators argued that extensions encourage complacency and reduce accountability.
The current registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, was first appointed in 2016 by the late President Muhammadu Buhari and reappointed in 2021. His second term ends in 2026.
Speaking with journalists, the Secretary of the Association of Tutorial School Operators in Oyo State, Mr Ogundokun Olufunso, said: “Five years is enough. Extending it to 10 years is too much. Tenure extension breeds overconfidence and loopholes.”
Olufunso also criticised JAMB’s decision to restrict services such as change of institution and O’level result uploads to its offices and CBT centres. According to him, the policy sidelines cybercafés, raises costs for candidates, and creates unnecessary congestion.
Despite the concerns, he praised the adoption of computer-based testing, describing it as a reform that has improved credibility in the examination process and increased enrolment for tutorials.
