The suspect behind the tragic shooting of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk has been taken into custody, following a massive manhunt. US President Donald Trump confirmed the arrest during a live interview with Fox News on Friday.

Trump revealed that the arrest came after a person close to the suspect, a minister and person of faith, helped bring him to justice. “Somebody very close to him turned him in,” Trump said, adding, “The person was involved with law enforcement, but was a person of faith, a minister, and brought him to a US Marshal who was fantastic. They drove into the police headquarters, and he’s there now.”

The shooting occurred on Wednesday at Utah Valley University during a speech by Kirk, 31, a prominent advocate for conservative viewpoints. Witnesses say the gunman, from a distance of up to 200 yards, fired a single fatal shot at Kirk from a rooftop. Authorities believe the gunman then fled the scene, running across the roof and towards nearby trees, where a high-powered rifle was later discovered.

The FBI’s manhunt mobilised hundreds of agents from multiple law enforcement agencies. Surveillance footage captured a man wearing a black baseball cap, dark sunglasses, and a long-sleeved shirt emblazoned with an American flag. The suspect was apprehended just days after the killing.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox has confirmed that the state will seek the death penalty for the shooter, given the gravity of the crime. The case has attracted national attention, with high-profile figures, including Vice President JD Vance, transporting Kirk’s coffin back to Phoenix on an official plane.

The political ramifications of the killing are profound. Kirk, a co-founder of Turning Point USA, was a vocal supporter of conservative causes, particularly anti-immigration policies, gun ownership, and outspoken Christianity. His death has sent shockwaves through both right-wing and broader US political circles, with many describing him as a “martyr” for conservative values.

In the wake of the killing, students at Utah Valley University expressed their shock. “We watch him all the time, and so it really does feel like one of your own family members, your own brother’s been killed,” said 26-year-old Dave Sanchez. A vigil was held at Orem Park on Thursday evening, with attendees praying and holding a moment of silence.

Kirk’s supporters, including many from right-wing media, have mourned his loss and vowed to honour his legacy. However, President Trump has urged his followers to respond peacefully, despite the anger and grief over the tragic incident.
