Tobi Amusan, the former world champion and record holder in the women’s 100m hurdles, has expressed disappointment with the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) for the inadequate kit provided for Nigerian athletes competing in the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo.

With the event set to kick off, Amusan took to social media to voice her frustration, drawing attention to what she described as a lack of professionalism and coordination. The Nigerian government, she claimed, handed athletes their competition kits in nylon bags, unlike other countries which provide their athletes with kits in suitcases.

In a video posted on Snapchat, Amusan shared her concerns, saying, “This country will steadily embarrass you. Una come say make people nor switch allegiance? Una never ready!” She further explained that the competition gear given to the athletes was subpar, stating, “They gave us two. Everything two, una dey see. Oya. Competition gear wey be say if you sweat like this, the colour go dey peel for body.”

She also pointed out the absence of essential items such as long sleeves or singlets, which left many athletes unprepared for the event. “Where long sleeves? No singlet, no nothing. We never get clothes wey we go wear for them,” she lamented.

Amusan’s criticism didn’t stop there. She revealed that despite officials collecting shoe sizes from the athletes, no shoes were included in the kits. “So as it is now, I have to wear my Adidas black tights,” she said.

In the video caption, she sarcastically asked, “Abeg which country dey find athletes?” a comment likely alluding to her frustrations and hinting at a possible change of allegiance, following in the footsteps of Nigerian sprinter Favour Ofili, who recently switched to represent Turkey.

Amusan is leading a 15-athlete contingent that will compete at the 2025 World Athletics Championships, which runs from September 13 to 21 in Tokyo. The team will face off against world-class athletes across various disciplines in what promises to be a highly competitive event.
