Daniel Bwala, special adviser to President Bola Tinubu on policy communication, has said former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar stands no chance of unseating the ruling party in Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election, dismissing emerging opposition efforts as weak and uncoordinated.
Bwala’s remarks came in response to comments made by Abubakar during an appearance on Arise Television on Wednesday, where the former presidential candidate weighed in on the country’s political trajectory and the prospects of opposition alliances ahead of the next election cycle.
In a strongly worded reaction, the presidential aide argued that any coalition being formed around Abubakar lacks the structure and national appeal required to challenge the incumbent administration. He described the opposition’s efforts as “stateless”, suggesting they are disconnected from the political realities on the ground.
“President Tinubu will defeat you again,” Bwala said, addressing Abubakar directly, while expressing confidence in the ruling party’s ability to retain power in 2027.
The exchange highlights early political jostling in Nigeria as key figures begin to position themselves years ahead of the next general elections. While no formal campaign season has begun, rhetoric between government allies and opposition leaders has intensified in recent months.
Abubakar, who has contested the presidency multiple times, has been a central figure in discussions about a potential opposition coalition aimed at unseating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). However, divisions within opposition ranks and questions over unity continue to shape the debate.
Analysts say the evolving political landscape suggests that alliances, messaging and public perception will play critical roles as Nigeria moves closer to another high-stakes electoral contest.
