Ibadan is set for a historic moment on Friday, 26 September 2025, as former Oyo State governor and respected statesman, Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, is crowned the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.
President Bola Tinubu will join eminent Yoruba monarchs, political leaders, business moguls, and thousands of Ibadan sons and daughters at the coronation, to be held at the iconic Mapo Hall grounds.
Unveiling details at a press briefing, Chief Bayo Oyero, Chairman of the Coronation Committee, described the event as “a momentous cultural milestone” and announced a week-long programme celebrating Ibadan’s rich heritage.
Activities will begin on Monday, 22 September, with an interdenominational service at the Olubadan Palace. A cultural fiesta, lecture by world-renowned historian Professor Toyin Falola, and a mega praise concert coinciding with Oba Ladoja’s 81st birthday are scheduled before the grand ceremony on Friday. A thanksgiving service and Jumat prayers will round off the celebrations.
“This coronation is more than Ibadan’s; it symbolises Yoruba pride, Nigerian culture, and African resilience,” Oyero said. He commended Governor Seyi Makinde for his support, noting that it was the first time a non-government official would chair the planning committee.
The Oyo State Government has assured robust security, with over 2,000 personnel deployed, while the event will be broadcast live on television, radio, and social media for Nigerians at home and abroad.
Fuji stars Saheed Osupa, Taye Currency, and other indigenous musicians are billed to perform, adding colour to the festivities.
Dignitaries expected include state governors, diplomats, Yoruba monarchs, and Ibadan indigenes from across the globe.
