Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has signalled his readiness for the 2027 presidential election, framing it as a pivotal moment to “break the shackles of poverty and ignorance” and safeguard the country’s democracy.
Speaking on Thursday, Tinubu dismissed a recent convention by the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing it as lacking seriousness and substance.
“I’m ready. This is an opportunity of a lifetime to break the shackles of poverty and ignorance, to ensure democracy survives — not the noise-making, not the rascality of street convention,” the president said.
His remarks appear to set the tone for what could become an increasingly heated political landscape ahead of the next general elections, as parties begin early positioning and rhetoric intensifies.
Tinubu, who assumed office in 2023, has repeatedly emphasised his administration’s commitment to economic reforms and democratic stability, though critics argue that challenges such as inflation and insecurity remain pressing concerns.
The ADC has yet to formally respond to the president’s comments.
