President Bola Tinubu has met with the Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, to discuss ongoing efforts aimed at securing the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
The meeting, held at the State House in Abuja, is understood to be part of a broader engagement strategy by the Federal Government to address security concerns and foster stability in the South-East. Although details of the discussion were not officially disclosed, sources familiar with the talks said Governor Otti briefed the President on the socio-political implications of Kanu’s continued detention and the growing calls for a political solution.
President Tinubu, who has repeatedly emphasised dialogue and national cohesion, was said to have assured the Abia governor that his administration is exploring all lawful options to ensure lasting peace in the region.
Governor Otti later told journalists that the conversation with the President was “constructive and encouraging,” noting that the atmosphere in the South-East remains tense and requires decisive yet conciliatory steps from the Federal Government.
The renewed push for Kanu’s release comes amid heightened appeals from political leaders, traditional rulers, and civil society groups, who argue that resolving the issue is key to restoring calm and economic stability in the region.
While no definitive timeline has been given, stakeholders are optimistic that the high-level engagement signals a significant step towards a possible resolution.
