President Bola Tinubu has nominated four national commissioners and two Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in a move that will bring new appointments and changes to the electoral body’s leadership.

The nominations include three new national commissioners and the reappointment of Dr Bala Bila, alongside two nominees for Resident Electoral Commissioner positions in Ekiti and Jigawa states.

Among those nominated as national commissioners are Professor Mustapha Aliu, representing the North-West, and Bashir Muhammed Umar, representing the North-Central.

Aliu is to replace Professor Abdullahi Zuru, while Umar is nominated to succeed Professor Muhammad Adamu.

Mrs Oluwatoyin Babalola, who currently serves as a Resident Electoral Commissioner in Osun State, has also been nominated as a national commissioner for the South-West. She is expected to replace Professor Cornelius Ajayi.

Dr Bila, representing the North-East, has been reappointed as a national commissioner.

For the Resident Electoral Commissioner positions, President Tinubu has nominated Dr Samuel Akinjide Akinleye for Ekiti State and Zahradden Basiru Sanusi for Jigawa State.

Sanusi is nominated to replace Professor Saidu Ahmed Babura.

The nominations cover different geopolitical zones and include both new appointments and a reappointment within the electoral commission.

INEC is responsible for organising and supervising elections in Nigeria, including presidential, governorship, National Assembly and state assembly polls.

The nominations come at a time when the commission’s leadership and preparations for future elections remain central to discussions about electoral credibility and democratic governance in the country.

Further details on the confirmation process and the date the nominees are expected to assume office were not provided in the information available.
