President cautions against violence and electoral malpractice as Nigerians head to crucial elections

Abuja, Nigeria – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued a strong warning against violence, voter intimidation and electoral malpractice ahead of elections in the Federal Capital Territory, Kano State and Rivers State, urging political actors and supporters to uphold peace and democratic principles.

In a statement released on Friday, the president emphasised that the integrity of the electoral process must not be compromised, describing the polls as a critical test of Nigeria’s democratic maturity.

“Elections are not a battlefield,” Tinubu said. “They are a civic responsibility. I will not tolerate any act capable of undermining the credibility of our democracy.”

Call for restraint

The president called on candidates, party leaders and supporters to conduct themselves responsibly, warning that security agencies have been directed to deal decisively with individuals or groups attempting to disrupt the process.

Tinubu stressed that violence, ballot manipulation and voter suppression would not be condoned, adding that those found culpable would face the full weight of the law.

The elections in the three politically significant regions are being closely watched amid heightened political tensions and intense campaigns.

Security and accountability

Security agencies have reportedly been placed on alert to ensure a peaceful exercise, particularly in areas previously affected by electoral disputes. Civil society groups have also called for transparency and strict adherence to electoral guidelines.

Observers say the outcome of the polls could shape political alignments ahead of future national contests.
