The All Progressives Congress (APC) Senate candidate and former Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello, has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for commencing rehabilitation work on the long-neglected Abuja-Lokoja-Okene-Benin highway, describing the road as one that “defied every administration” since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999.
Bello said successive governments had failed to address the deplorable condition of the strategic corridor linking the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to several parts of the country, despite years of public outcry and mounting economic losses caused by the deteriorating road network.
“Since 1999 till 2023, the road from FCT to Lokoja to Okene across to Benin defied every administration in this nation,” Bello said. “The current administration under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is fixing the road.”
The highway, one of Nigeria’s busiest transport routes, serves as a major link between the north and the south and has for years been plagued by deadly accidents, gridlock and complaints from motorists and commuters over its poor condition.
Bello’s remarks come amid ongoing infrastructure projects being promoted by the Tinubu administration as part of efforts to improve transportation, boost trade and ease movement across the country.
