A heated moment unfolded on Wednesday night between Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman and Atalanta manager Ivan Jurić, following the Nigerian’s substitution in their 1–0 win over Olympique Marseille in the ongoing European campaign.
The brief but intense exchange occurred in the 72nd minute when Jurić decided to replace Lookman with Yunus Musah, a decision that did not sit well with the Nigerian star. The visibly frustrated forward appeared to question the move as he walked off the pitch, prompting a short confrontation with his coach on the touchline.
Video footage of the incident, which quickly circulated across social media, showed Jurić appearing to nudge the player, while Lookman responded sharply before walking away. The moment has since stirred mixed reactions among fans, especially within Nigeria’s football community, with many questioning the manager’s approach towards the 2024 CAF Player of the Year.
According to observers, the substitution came at a time when Lookman had been one of Atalanta’s most dangerous attackers. His 68th-minute goal had earlier been ruled offside after a VAR review, and moments later he was taken off for Musah, leaving fans puzzled.
Despite the tension, Atalanta secured a crucial victory through a stoppage-time strike from Lazar Samardžić, sealing the three points at the Stade Vélodrome. The result lifts the Italian side to seven points from four matches, keeping their qualification hopes alive, while Marseille remain on three points.
During the match, Atalanta missed a first-half penalty through Charles De Ketelaere, after Gerónimo Rulli fouled Nikola Krstović inside the box. Marseille, who dominated much of the possession, also had appeals for a handball penalty turned down before being punished on the counterattack.
The latest confrontation has once again placed Lookman’s relationship with Atalanta under scrutiny. Reports suggest that tension between the Nigerian international and the club’s management began during the 2025 summer transfer window, when Atalanta blocked multiple offers for the player.
Lookman, who has scored 53 goals and provided 25 assists since joining the Bergamo side, reportedly felt frustrated after being denied a move despite interest from top European clubs. He later took to social media to express his dissatisfaction, hinting at strained communication with the management — a situation that first emerged under former coach Gian Piero Gasperini, who had once publicly criticised him for missing a penalty.
“It feels like Jurić is continuing from where Gasperini stopped,” one Italian sports commentator observed. “Lookman’s professionalism has never been in doubt, but there’s clearly tension over how he’s being managed.”
