United States President Donald Trump has described “Operation Epic Fury” against Iran as “one of the largest, most complex, most overwhelming military offensives the world has ever seen,” amid reports that the country’s newly appointed Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Arafi, was killed in an airstrike less than 24 hours after assuming office.

In a statement released late on Sunday, Trump praised US forces for what he called a “precision-led, intelligence-driven operation” targeting key military and strategic assets inside Iran. He said the offensive demonstrated America’s “unmatched strength and resolve” and warned Tehran against any retaliatory action.

Iranian state media reported that Ayatollah Arafi, who had been appointed Supreme Leader following an emergency leadership transition, was killed in a strike on what officials described as a “secure administrative compound”. The reports could not be independently verified, and Iranian authorities have yet to provide full details of the circumstances surrounding his death.

The sudden killing of Arafi – less than a day into his tenure – has deepened uncertainty in Iran’s political establishment and heightened fears of further escalation across the region.

Regional tensions had already been running high amid mounting hostilities between Washington and Tehran, with both sides trading accusations over security incidents and alleged proxy attacks. Analysts say the scale of “Operation Epic Fury”, as described by the White House, marks a significant escalation compared with previous limited strikes.

In his remarks, Trump insisted the operation was designed to “neutralise imminent threats” and restore deterrence, adding that the United States “does not seek prolonged conflict but will respond decisively to aggression”.

International reaction has been swift. Several world leaders have called for restraint, warning that further escalation could destabilise the wider Middle East. Diplomatic channels at the United Nations were reportedly engaged in urgent consultations as global markets reacted nervously to the developments.

With Iran facing a sudden leadership vacuum and the US signalling readiness for further action if provoked, the coming hours are expected to be critical in determining whether the confrontation spirals into broader conflict or shifts towards diplomatic containment.
